Also, what should be the believer's posture in relation to the Bible?
Memory verse: 2 Timothy 3:16
Key passages: II Peter 1:19-21; Psalm 119

10 Reasons Why I Am Thankful for the God-Breathed Bible
Four characteristics of Scripture:
1. Authority and inerrancy
2. Clarity
3. Necessity
4. Sufficiency
We will look at what the Bible says about itself. We also need to think about our personal application of this lesson. Based on what the Bible says about itself, how do we respond? How do we relate to this book? What are our options for response?

Summary from this morning:
Scriptures cited: 2 Tim 3:14-17; 2 Peter 1:16-17; 3:15-16; John 20:31; 17:17; 5:39; Matt 4:1-11; Luke 1:1-4; Acts 1:1-3; 2:42; 17:11; 1 Cor 8:1; 2:12-16; Mal 1:1; Hag 2:1; Ez 1:3.
Summary statement: We affirmed the statement on the Word of God from the church statement of faith. We discussed the nature of inspiration, that God spoke through the individuals who wrote in such a way as to use their distinct personalities, yet speaking the very words desired. We also discussed the role of the Holy Spirit in not only inspiration, but also in preservation of the scriptures and cannonization (directing what is included and excluded from the Bible).
As to our posture with respect to the Bible, we discussed its authority over us as individuals and as a body. We discussed the tension between the Bible's call to humility, love and gentleness, in contrast to the call to exercise discipline. It is important for us to be able to distinguish what elements of our own "religious" experience are based on the Bible versus based on our social, cultural, and traditional values. Both individually and as a church, we can often stray into believing that our "ways" of doing things are scriptural, when in fact they may be based on tradition or culture, rather than on scripture.
As we come to a point of affirming that the Bible is inspired, without error, and authoritative, it leads us to next weeks question that focusses on our habits with respect to reading and memorizing scripture. If we are to submit to the Bible and follow its teachings, what are we doing to be sure that we know what it says to us in various areas of our lives?
